I’m so upset. I spent 110 (10 dollar tip) on a blow out with a deep conditioner and I asked for the barrel curling iron as the add on. I don’t think he read that in the notes. I showed him the blowout I wanted in a picture. It was loose voluminous with soft waves. But he used a thin curling iron. I didn’t realize it cuz I was on my phone playing a game which was my mistake. It wasn’t until he got to the front pieces that I looked up and was in shock. I left with tight curls instead of a blowout. I kept pulling on it to try and make it fall but the ends are so curly. I have Medium to think long hair. I’m just so upset. I went today to treat myself and I don’t have 110 dollars but I felt like I needed the pick me up. It wasn’t a good experience . He kept telling me it would fall in 20/30 mins because I have fine hair and it has not. ( trust me I do not have fine hair) . - Veronica Flores

Crucially, address the highly concerning customer reports factually and directly. I must state that customers report inconsistencies in pricing, cancellations, communication issues, and accusations of discriminatory practices related to charging significantly more for curly/thick hair using terms like "XL hair." I will contrast the professional amenities with the need for customers to be extremely cautious, confirm prices, and inquire about specific stylist experience with their hair type before booking.Word Count Strategy: Achieving 800+ words requires extensive elaboration on the vast range of services and accessibility features. The "What is worth choosing" section will be the largest, allowing for a detailed yet factual discussion of the business's potential (vast services, inclusive amenities) versus the serious documented risks (reported high costs, cancellations, and alleged discriminatory practices).Final Output GenerationThe final output must be in a code block, using HTML formatting as requested.```htmlTamed By Gravity Salon & Spa, Chicago: Full-Service Hair, Beauty & Wellness in Southport

Choosing Tamed By Gravity Salon & Spa means selecting a business with an expansive service menu and a strong commitment to physical accessibility and social inclusion, which are major benefits for the diverse Illinois clientele. The sheer number of services, including advanced techniques like Balayage, Brazilian Blowouts, and multiple types of Lash Extensions, means clients can consolidate many beauty appointments into one trusted location. The full accessibility of the facility—including parking and restrooms—is a significant advantage not found everywhere in urban Chicago.

However, an essential and factual consideration for any prospective client must be the serious and repeated pattern of negative customer feedback, particularly regarding service consistency, communication, and pricing practices. Customers have reported issues ranging from a simple service not matching the requested style (e.g., tight curls instead of a loose, voluminous blowout) to much more concerning and systemic issues.

The most critical concern reported by multiple customers involves alleged discriminatory practices and inconsistent pricing for clients with curly or thick hair. Customers report that the salon uses terms like “XL hair” to categorize curly or thick hair types and then charges significantly more—with specific examples citing a $100 service for straight hair being priced at $180 for curly hair. Furthermore, clients have reported abrupt cancellations (sometimes on the day of the appointment) over small price discrepancies (e.g., an additional $10 charge) and communication failures, including hanging up the phone on customers inquiring about the issues. These reported actions are deeply serious and suggest a need for extreme caution when booking.

Given the change in ownership twice in the past year and a half, as noted by a client, potential customers should be aware that the salon's policies and service consistency may be in flux. While the vast array of services is tempting, customers with non-straight or thick hair should urgently call ahead to confirm the exact price for their specific hair type and service, inquire about the specific experience of the assigned stylist with that hair texture, and document the agreed-upon cost to avoid last-minute cancellations or unexpected charges. The current customer feedback strongly suggests a high risk of poor communication, price confusion, and dissatisfaction. Clients should rely on the inclusive LGBTQ+ friendly designation and the outstanding accessibility features, but must proceed with extreme diligence regarding service pricing and specific hair type accommodation.

  • Discriminatory practices!! They cancel curly hair appointments or charge significantly more. I stopped going here a while back after they decided to charge people with curly hair twice as much as people with straight hair. Some of the stylists have shared that they have never learned how to do hair that is not straight, but still want to advertise that they do and charge those customers more for the “extra time”.I finally decided to book another appointment and try them again since it had been well over a year. I booked with them on Vagaro, but for curly hair they have something called XL hair?!They use descriptions like “XL” to describe curly or thick hair and some services charge $100 for straight hair vs $180 for curly. When booking, you have to agree to be charged if you book the wrong service, despite their lists of services are weirdly written. I called and spoke with Evelyn for about 10 minutes and we discussed which services would be right for me and she insisted I try them again. I learned they have changed owners twice in the past year and a half. So it’s under different management than when I was last there. So we booked services for $110 for an “XL” blowout, an additional charge to use a flat iron… and a quick trim. And she said to bring my own K18.I also learned that apparently after a year and a half their services lists are still incorrect and what you book as customer online might be a different price then what they will charge you the day of your appointment. Then this morning, the day of the appointment with Alexianna, I received text message stating that they are canceling my appointment for this afternoon! Apparently, because they wanted to charge me an additional $10.Rather than call me, they cancel appointment. So, I called them this morning and they literally picked up the phone, listened to me say hello and hung up. I called back and they sent it to voicemail. This is beyond just being unprofessional or rude. This is prejudice and disrespect they are showing people, paying customers, for not having straight hair and it is abhorrent. If you want to be charged more, cancelled on, disrespected, and discriminated against for not being their preferred client “type”, this is the salon for you.

  • I’ve been three times now since the new owners. The first in Wicker Park. The stylist had just gone on a smoking break and so his hands smelled like cigarette smoke. I asked if he could wash them and he got offended. I tried southport now twice. The first was with a male stylist. He did a nice job of styling however the head massage was him just shaking my head. Not what I had anticipated. The second was with a female stylist. Her head massage was great however the style was just ok. It took over an hour. I feel since new ownership, the services has declined. It’s less professional and definitely not as good. I will not be returning.

  • I had a really disappointing experience at this salon. Before booking, I called ahead specifically to ask if they had a stylist experienced with short, naturally curly hair. The person on the phone seemed unsure but checked with someone and assured me they did. When I arrived, there was no one at the front desk to greet me—just two people sitting in salon chairs on their phones. Eventually, one of them gestured for me to come over without introducing themselves or asking for my name.I showed the stylist a picture of the look I wanted, which I’ve achieved before with just styling products and a diffuser. He insisted I would need a curling iron, which made me immediately concerned. After washing my hair, he brushed it (which is unusual for curly hair), and then we went back and forth again about whether a curling iron was necessary. At this point, I realized I was essentially instructing him on how to style my hair. Then, he struggled to find a diffuser attachment—eventually pulling out one that was still inside its original plastic bag packaging which was torn open for the first time in front of me, indicating it had never been used before. That was the final red flag for me. I no longer trusted that he knew how to work with my hair type, so I ended the appointment before he finished. To top it off, the other employee was playing on their phone with the audio on, making the environment feel unprofessional and inattentive. If you have short, naturally curly hair, I strongly advise against coming here. They may do well with longer or straighter hair, but they clearly lack the experience and confidence to handle curls properly.

  • I had a great experience getting a blow out by Kristin! She was warm and friendly and I was confident in her ability and commitment to giving me a look I would be happy with. My hair was efficiently but carefully styled and it looks great. I’m glad I booked a curly/thick appointment so that neither my stylist nor I felt rushed. This is definitely worth the more than reasonable cost in my opinion. This experience exceeded my expectations. I will be back and am considering purchasing a package for several blow outs.
