Fatou Hair Braiding Introduce
For residents in the Illinois region, particularly in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Fatou Hair Braiding is a long-standing and well-known destination for specialized protective hairstyling. As a dedicated hair salon, its expertise centers around intricate and complex hair techniques, including various forms of braiding and the integration of extensions. The salon prides itself on having a team of skilled professionals—including the owner, Fatou, and specific braiders such as the two Amy’s, Iesha, and Maggie—who are affectionately appreciated by their loyal clientele. One enthusiastic customer noted, "Theeee best I love everybody and they do good braids thanks to all the ladies... She got a customer for life!!!"
The core identity of Fatou Hair Braiding is rooted in offering traditional and modern African hair styling, making it a critical resource for individuals seeking high-quality box braids, twists, weaves, and other protective styles that require time, patience, and expert technique. The positive reviews highlight a strong sense of community and appreciation for the skill delivered by many of the braiders. When the service is excellent, the results are undeniable, fostering a deep loyalty that keeps customers returning to the South Jeffery Boulevard location. The positive environment is clearly a priority for the team, aiming to make every appointment a pleasant experience.
However, potential clients should be aware that, as with any busy, specialized service provider, experiences can vary. One detailed account from a customer illustrates that attention to detail, communication, and adherence to client preferences regarding tightness—especially around delicate edges—are essential for a successful service. While the experience with one braider, Maggie, was consistently praised for a gentle touch and great results, another experience resulted in discomfort and hair damage, highlighting the importance of clear communication with the specific braider assigned to a service. It is advisable for Illinois users to follow the popular advice of requesting a specific, trusted braider like Maggie when booking.
Fatou Hair Braiding is conveniently located in a busy and accessible area of Chicago, Illinois, serving the local South Shore community.

The salon's location on South Jeffery Boulevard makes it a central fixture for residents in the area. Clients can expect a dedicated space focused on the lengthy process of hair braiding. The salon is equipped with a clean Restroom for client comfort during what can be a several-hour-long appointment.
A crucial detail for all clients planning a visit is the payment method: Fatou Hair Braiding is a Cash-only establishment. Given the complexity and time required for braiding, booking an appointment is strongly recommended to ensure availability and proper time allocation for the desired style. As a specialty hair salon, Fatou Hair Braiding focuses primarily on protective and extended hair services, requiring a high degree of skill in manipulation and intricate styling.
- Professional Hair Braiding: The core service, which includes popular and specialized styles such as box braids, knotless braids, cornrows, twists, micro braids, and potentially other African hair braiding techniques. Pricing is generally based on the size, length, and intricacy of the chosen style.
- Hair Extensions: The integration of synthetic or human hair into the client's natural hair, a vital component of most braiding and protective styles like box braids. The salon is listed as a provider of Hair extensions services.
- Hairstyling: General hair styling services, which encompass finishing touches, updos, or styling of natural hair, often as a prelude or conclusion to the extension or braiding process.
- Natural Hair Protective Styles: The salon's expertise lies in styles that protect the hair, appealing to clients seeking to retain length and minimize manipulation of their natural hair.
- Weaving Services: While the reviews focus heavily on braids, the nature of African hair salons often includes various weaving and sew-in techniques.
Fatou Hair Braiding is distinguished by several key features that contribute to its standing as a local hair care provider in the Chicago community.
- Specialization in Braiding: The salon’s primary focus on complex, time-intensive braiding and extension services makes it a specialist in a high-demand niche within the Illinois beauty market.
- Strong Team and Loyal Following: The shop boasts a loyal clientele and a team of known braiders (Fatou, Amy’s, Iesha, Maggie) who are frequently commended for their good work, creating a familiar and trusted environment.
- Community Appreciation: Long-term customers express genuine affection for the entire team, indicating a positive and friendly atmosphere within the salon.
- Cash-Only Policy: While an inconvenience for some, the Cash-only payment structure can often contribute to streamlined operations and potentially helps maintain competitive pricing for the time-intensive services provided.
- Managerial Presence: The presence of a manager (Iesha) and a team of braiders suggests a structure beyond a single independent stylist, allowing the shop to handle multiple clients daily.
- Focus on Protective Styles: The services emphasize protective styling, which is highly valued by clients prioritizing hair health and growth retention.

October 06 · Tiara CurryI went and got my hair braided in box braids on January 7, 2021. I arrived for my 10am appointment a little early and the braider didn’t arrive until a little after 11am. She began braiding my hair and when she reached the top of my head I asked her not to braid too tight around the edges because my hair is soft and can break easily. She started out light handed but when she got on the phone she started braiding tighter. Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve come to this shop but it will be the last. In the past Maggie braided my hair in the exact same style and I had no issues. She didn’t pull my hair unnecessarily tight and she listened when I asked her not to braid the edges too tight. Normally when I get my hair braided in this style my head hurts for 2 days maaaybe 3. But this time my head was hurting over a week and 1/2, and I was unable to sleep. The braids feel extremely heavy at the top and I haven’t been able to wear them down because the heaviness hurts and I can feel the tugging of my hair. I started to see white follicles at the knot of the braid which let me know my hair was being pulled out. I also took 1 of the braids down on my edges because it was hurting so bad and a clump of my hair came out with it. I now have peach fuzz where there was once 4 inches of hair (I have long thick hair which is why I was charged $200 vs the starting rate of $180). At this point I was just ready to just take it down. But a family member told me I should call and let them know because this happened to her before and they fixed the problem. (Not at this establishment). So I decided to call and let whomever was in charge know the issue to see if it could be resolved. I spoke with the manager Iesha and let her know about the issue. I expressed that I believe the amount of hair used on the small sections was too heavy and was pulling my hair out. She didn’t seem interested in hearing what I had to say and kept smacking her lips. She said oh can you just call back in a couple of weeks when the owner is back? She’s out of town right now. I said a couple of weeks? (Confused) So nothing can be done now? My hair is being pulled out. She said just call back in a week. (So now it’s a week is what I’m thinking) At this point I don’t even want them touching my hair again. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to patronize this business if this is how they conduct business. I would think that if the owner entrusted someone as their manager to run their business while their out of town...they would know how to resolve an issue. And if it’s an issue they can’t resolve, then they should call the owner for proper protocol and at the least follow up with the client. Anyone considering patronizing this business, avoid letting the short woman with dreadlocked hair to touch your hair...she clearly doesn’t know what she’s doing. Wait for Maggie or DON’T go at all. (According to them she’s also out of town.) I will post pictures if I figure out how to.
February 02 · Florence PittmanQuick and fast. Though they are fast, your braids still look very nice and neat. I will return and im really picky about my braids. I shared that i had very sensitive spots in my head and she was very cognizant of that. My braids are secure but they are not pulling super tight. Very pleased indeed.
September 03 · Davene DavisThey can do really good hair, though they tend to be really unprofessional. While I came for my appointment, someone who also made an appointment as well wanted a certain type of hairstyle. While they approved that they can do the hairstyle for her at the time she scheduled when she actually came to get her hair done they all of a sudden announced they didn't have anyone who could've did that hairstyle. So it was like, why even approve if you weren't going to make sure someone could've came and did her hair? it's misleading.
December 10 · ZionIf I couldn't put a star at all I would. NEVER GO HERE.! I REPEAT NEVER GO HERE.!! I was recommend to the owner whom started on the back of my hair (two rows) the size I wanted but the braids was loose. My hair is coming out of them and it hasn't even been 24 hours.! Her sister started on them, who braids extra tight and started a different size than I asked and told me " wait until I'm done". The ones in the back have some of my hair burnt in the ends. Some of the braids in the front are coming down. When she dipped (which I had to ask and still had to wait 30 minutes until she came back) YES, the sister left without finishing, she left the top of the braids round and then the bottom of them straight with the ugliest dent in them. When contacted about the issue she stated as you can just dip them again. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.! If I could post pics on here I definitely would. Please save your money and go somewhere else.!
